Operative procedure

The procedure itself is most often performed as a one-day surgery, under general anesthesia. Through a small incision in the groin, a non-functioning vein is found at the point where it joins the deep venous system. Here the vein is ligated and the connection to the deep venous system is severed. The vein is then prepared and removed from the limb to the outside, most often in the area of the ankle or lower leg. The remaining lateral varicose veins are then removed with special Smetana knives. The classic operation is effective, but it also carries disadvantages.

FAQ

The classic SURGICAL operation of varicose veins is effective and as the only method FULLY PAID by the health insurance company, including stockings and pantyhose II. compression classes prescribed by your treating or general practitioner (on the Medical and Orthopedic Aid Voucher).

The disadvantage of the classic surgical operation for varicose veins is longer incapacity for work lasting 3-4 weeks, greater post-operative pain and long-term wearing of elastic compression stockings after the operation, compared to other methods.

  • After the procedure, the patient is escorted home after 2-4 hours.
  • The day of surgery should take place in rest mode. To prevent swelling, it is necessary to have both lower limbs (operated and non-operated) in an elevated position.
  • For the first three weeks after surgery, it is necessary to use a limb bandage day and night (both a classic elastic bandage and a more comfortable compression elastic stocking can be used).
  • Walking is important from the first postoperative day. This is repeated short-term walking with an attached elastic bandage (stocking) and with restrictions on standing or sitting. Between individual errands, it is recommended to lie on the bed with slightly supported limbs and perform active movements in the ankle with the toe pulling.
  • From the 3rd day, you can shower the wound briefly, dry it properly and leave it uncovered. You can prevent wetting of the wound in the groin by applying a tab (longette) so that the skin does not rub against each other. Sutures are removed 7-14 days after the operation, depending on the condition.

For the first 4 - 6 weeks, it is necessary to avoid demanding sports activities. Normal exercises, such as cycling, swimming, can be carried out already 3-4 weeks after surgery. The measures are completely individual and dependent on the scope of the performance, your attending physician will recommend a suitable activity.

As a rule, only an examination by a general practitioner and a laboratory examination, including blood coagulation, are necessary before the operation. An ultrasound examination of the venous system is a matter of course.
